The standardization of the petroleum, petrochemical, and chemical engineering sectors plays a vital role in China's overall standardization efforts. These industries contribute significantly to the national and sectoral standards, with product standards making up over 10% of all national and industry-level standards. Additionally, international standards (ISO) for related products also represent more than 10% of the total. As of June 2004, the petroleum, petrochemical, and chemical industries had established a total of 6,635 standards.
The China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association oversees the centralized management of 3,717 chemical industry standards. Out of these, 1,976 are national standards, with 261 being mandatory, accounting for 13.2% of the total. The remaining 1,741 are industry standards, of which 233 are mandatory, representing 13.4%. Notably, 1,327 national chemical standards have adopted international or advanced foreign standards, making up 67.2%, while 601 industry standards have done the same, at 34.5%. The overall adoption rate stands at 52%.
The China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation manages 1,119 petrochemical industry standards, including 361 national standards, 704 industry standards, 5 physical standards, and 49 military standards. The current sampling rate for petrochemical industry standards is approximately 72%.
China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) is responsible for 1,799 oil industry standards. Among these, 112 are national petroleum standards, with 50 adopting international or advanced foreign standards, achieving a rate of 49.1%. For the remaining 1,687 industry standards, 120 have incorporated international or foreign advanced standards, resulting in a rate of 7.1%. Overall, the standardization rate for CNPC's standards reaches 9.4%.
These figures highlight the extensive efforts made by Chinese industry associations and corporations to align with global standards, ensuring quality, safety, and efficiency in their respective sectors.
