On November 12, Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. officially announced that it has granted full authorization to Malaysian company ALADO to manufacture, assemble, distribute, and import six different models of Chery vehicles. This strategic move marks Chery's official entry into the ASEAN automotive market, a region known for its growing demand and competitive landscape. ALADO is part of BSA Group, Malaysia's leading aluminum alloy manufacturer, and has a strong background in automotive trading and sales.
Under the phased implementation agreement signed between the two parties, ALADO will begin by importing 10,000 Chery QQ cars in December, with a gradual shift to CKD (Completely Knocked Down) assembly as planned. The new manufacturing facility will be located in Nanma, a well-established automobile assembly plant in Fowey. ALADO aims to introduce three additional Chery models by 2005 and complete the full lineup of six models by 2006.
As a key strategic hub for Chery’s expansion into Southeast Asia, the Malaysian plant will serve as a central point for resource allocation, customer service, and technical support. Additionally, Chery plans to establish 40 to 50 franchise dealers across the ASEAN region, starting with Vietnam and Indonesia. This move is expected to significantly boost Chery’s presence and market share in the region.
According to reports, Chery has already signed export agreements for whole vehicles or CKDs with 23 countries worldwide. Its product range includes models such as Fengyun, Qiyun, QQ, Sons of the East, as well as upcoming SUVs and New Crossover models. In 2003, Chery exported over 1,200 vehicles, making up more than 90% of China’s total car exports. In 2004, the company aimed to reach 10,000 units in exports, and by October of this year, it had already accumulated over 8,000 units, accounting for more than 80% of China’s car exports.
