Glenview Police and Fire Departments responded to a serious collision involving a garbage truck and an SUV at the intersection of Harlem Avenue and Harrison Street early this afternoon. The garbage truck, operated by the Village of Skokie, was fully loaded when it struck the SUV that reportedly ran into its path. The truck, equipped with a large front plow, pushed the vehicle along the roadway, causing it to flip onto its roof. The garbage truck then came to rest on top of the SUV, and a fire broke out in both the truck’s cab and the SUV.
Three people were trapped inside the car and later confirmed dead. The truck driver managed to escape unharmed. Upon arrival, Glenview Engine 6 began extinguishing the fire using a deck gun, followed by a hand line to fully put out the flames and apply foam for safety. A local resident attempted to assist with a fire extinguisher but was forced back due to the intense heat.
Tray Cashman, a nearby resident, captured footage of Engine 6 arriving at the scene and battling the fire. Below are several images from the incident, taken by Larry Shapiro, showing the aftermath and emergency response.
