A historic Chamber of Commerce building in west suburban Lyons, which had stood as a symbol of the town's heritage, was severely damaged by a fire that broke out overnight, according to officials. The two-story structure at 3901 Joliet Ave. caught fire around 2:30 a.m. and was finally brought under control by 6 a.m.
Fire Chief Gordon Nord told reporters that when firefighters arrived, flames were already visible from the first-floor windows. “It was overwhelming,†he said. “We evacuated everyone and shifted to a defensive strategy.â€
Nord confirmed that the building is now beyond repair and will need to be demolished. While no injuries were reported, the loss of this iconic landmark has left many residents in shock.

No one was injured in the fire that raged through the vacant Lyons Chamber of Commerce building early Thursday morning. However, the blaze appears to have destroyed one of the town’s most recognizable landmarks.
The two-story ivory-colored building, constructed in the early 1900s, features intricate doorways and castle-like towers. Though it had been empty for years, it remained a cherished part of the community.
Firefighters worked for nearly four hours to bring the fire under control. Chief Nord described the scene as extremely challenging, with heavy flames and difficult-to-reach voids in the ceiling. “We had a lot of heavy fire in the tin ceiling on the first floor,†he said. “It really overpowered us.â€
During the fire, the top of one of the turret-like structures collapsed. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the damage was so severe that the building will not be saved.
As of early Friday, no injuries have been reported, and the town is coming to terms with the loss of a piece of its history.
