Landmark building burns in Lyons, 11-22-13

From The Chicago Tribune: A historic Chamber of Commerce building in west suburban Lyons, which had stood as a local landmark for decades, was severely damaged in a fire that broke out overnight, according to officials. The fire started around 2:30 a.m. at the two-story structure located at 3901 Joliet Ave., and it took firefighters nearly four hours to bring it under control by 6 a.m. Fire Chief Gordon Nord said that when crews arrived, flames were visible shooting from the first-floor windows. “It really overpowered us,” he told reporters. “We pulled everyone out and switched to a defensive strategy.” Nord confirmed that the building is beyond repair and will need to be demolished. Despite being vacant for years, the structure was considered an important part of the town’s history, featuring unique architectural elements like ornate doorways and castle-like towers. From CBS Chicago: No one was injured in the early morning fire that destroyed one of Lyons’ most recognizable landmarks. The former Chamber of Commerce building at 3901 Joliet Ave. caught fire just after 2:30 a.m. and burned for several hours before being extinguished. Although the building had electricity, gas service had been disconnected for some time, according to Fire Chief Gordon Nord. He described the fire as intense, with heavy flames coming from the first-floor windows and significant damage in the tin ceiling area. “It gave us a lot of problems with voids,” he said. “We had to pull everyone out and go on a defensive attack.” During the fire, the top of one of the building’s turret-like structures collapsed. As of early Friday, authorities have not yet determined the cause of the blaze, but they confirmed that the damage was too extensive for the building to be saved. Images from the scene captured by Brad Bartley show the once-proud structure now reduced to smoldering ruins. Thanks, Dan.
