Multiple fatalities at Glenview crash 10-15-13

Glenview Police and Fire Departments were called early this afternoon to respond to a serious accident involving a garbage truck and an SUV at the intersection of Harlem Avenue and Harrison Street. The garbage truck, operated by the Village of Skokie, was fully loaded when it collided with the SUV, which reportedly ran into its path. As the truck, equipped with a large front plow, pushed the vehicle along the road, the SUV flipped over and landed on its roof. The truck then came to rest on top of the car, and a fire broke out involving both the truck's cab and the SUV. Three people were trapped inside the SUV and tragically lost their lives. The truck driver managed to escape on his own and appeared to be unharmed. Glenview Engine 6 arrived quickly and began using tank water from the deck gun to combat the flames, followed by a hand line to fully extinguish the fire and apply a layer of foam to prevent re-ignition. An area resident attempted to help with a fire extinguisher but was forced back due to the intense heat. Tray Cashman, a nearby resident, captured footage of Engine 6 arriving and fighting the fire. The video provides a powerful visual of the emergency response. A series of photographs, taken by Larry Shapiro, show the scene in detail, including the fire engine in action and the wreckage of the garbage truck and SUV. These images offer a sobering look at the aftermath of the tragic incident. Local residents have expressed shock and concern over the event, emphasizing the importance of road safety and awareness. Emergency crews worked tirelessly to secure the area and assist with the investigation.
