Maywood Fire Department history

Check out the website of Old Custom Cruisers, a car club based in Bristol, Tennessee. They are the proud owners of two classic Ahrens-Fox pumpers—one from Chicago and another from Maywood, Illinois. These vintage fire apparatuses are not just historical relics; they represent a bygone era of firefighting technology.

This 1925 Ahrens-Fox Model JS4 pumper is capable of delivering 750 gallons per minute (GPM) under pressure. Its performance can be broken down as follows: 750 gallons at 120 psi for 6 hours, 375 gallons at 200 psi for 4 hours, and 250 gallons at 250 psi for 2 hours. This shows how versatile and durable these early pumps were.

The engine is a 6-cylinder unit with two spark plugs per cylinder, featuring a dual ignition system that includes both a magneto and a distributor. It also uses mechanical brakes and has a 3-speed manual transmission with a spring suspension, making it quite advanced for its time.

One of the standout features of this pump is the "Ball," or pulsation chamber. This component helps to smooth out the flow of water as it exits the nozzle, reducing the jerky motion that was common in early fire pumps. The tall chamber on the front side helped maintain vacuum on the intake side of the pump, which was crucial for efficient operation.

Interestingly, the design of this pump remained largely unchanged from 1915 all the way up to 1952, showing the effectiveness of the original engineering. This particular unit served in the Maywood, Illinois Fire Department before being acquired by Old Custom Cruisers. It was manufactured by Ahrens-Fox in Cincinnati, Ohio.
