On March 15, 2008, the China Mechanical and Electrical Commerce Association and Weichai Power jointly held a press conference to announce that China was invited to participate in the 10th Asia-Pacific Maritime Exhibition as a guest country for the first time. This marked a significant milestone, as it was also the first instance where foreign exhibitions granted Chinese pavilions a special guest status, highlighting the growing recognition of China's maritime industry on the global stage.
According to Yao Shenhong, a spokesperson from the Ministry of Commerce, China’s shipbuilding sector has shown remarkable growth in recent years. In 2007 alone, new ship orders placed by China surpassed those of South Korea and Japan, making it the world's largest shipbuilder. With a second-largest inventory of pending orders, China is now firmly established as a major player in the global shipbuilding market.
Interestingly, this year’s Asia-Pacific Maritime Exhibition saw a notable presence of private enterprises from China. This shift signals a move from overall exports to more focused exports of core components, particularly marine engines. As a result, the entire domestic shipbuilding supply chain is expected to benefit and grow collectively. Zhong Genghui, an assistant to the president of Weichai Power Co., Ltd., noted that the company holds over 70% of the market share in small and medium-sized marine engines.
After years of development, China’s civil shipbuilding industry has made significant progress. It has moved beyond its previous state of being fragmented, low-cost, and small-scale, transitioning toward specialization, large-scale production, and technological advancement. The influx of private capital has further accelerated the modernization of the national shipbuilding industry. China National Civil Shipbuilding Corporation has achieved international-standard performance in key areas such as bulk carriers, container ships, and tanker chemical vessels.
Today, China is home to over 3,000 civil shipbuilding companies, mostly small and medium-sized enterprises. Despite their size, these firms have experienced rapid growth and are increasingly aware of the importance of international markets. In 2007, the output of these companies accounted for nearly half of the total national output. Previously, two major groups—China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation and another leading group—had dominated the industry, accounting for about two-thirds of the national output. However, the emergence of a diverse and dynamic private sector is reshaping the landscape of China’s maritime industry.
