In the past year, the automotive diesel engine industry—once dominated by self-owned brands—has started to shift. With joint ventures, collaborative efforts, and new product launches, the Chinese diesel engine market is undergoing a transformation. How will these changes reshape the industry landscape?
**Lightweight Contention: From 3.0 to 7.2 Liters**
In August 2007, two major developments shook the Chinese diesel engine sector. One was Dongfeng Chaochai introducing the U.S. NGD 3.0 diesel engine, while the other was a joint venture between Dalian Diesel and German Deutz to produce Deutz engines ranging from 4.0 to 7.2 liters. The events were marked by high expectations, with leaders from both sides and many domestic automakers in attendance. What does this signal about the future of the industry?
At the product level, the NGD 3.0 is designed to power urban SUVs, MPVs, premium pickup trucks, and high-end light trucks. Meanwhile, FAW Dachai’s collaboration with Deutz has led to the production of three key series—1013, 2012, and 2013—offering 4- and 6-cylinder diesel engines that meet various power requirements.
From a strategic standpoint, Dachai and Chaochai’s moves are significant. Dongfeng Chaochai's introduction of the NGD 3.0 has solidified its position in the light diesel engine segment. As urban SUVs and MPVs have gained popularity, the demand for advanced power solutions has grown, and the NGD 3.0 is stepping in to meet this need. Similarly, the Deutz-Dachai joint venture targets the light commercial vehicle market, filling a gap in Dachai’s product lineup.
While Dachai and Chaochai are expanding their reach through partnerships, independent brands are also making strides. Wei Anli, Secretary-General of the China Internal Combustion Engine Association, noted, “Although our own-brand diesel engines aren’t as strong in the light vehicle sector, we’re developing them ourselves. In the near future, the power market will be ours.â€
Several companies are already working on new models. For example, Yunlong has developed the D106 and D109 diesel engines, which are equivalent in performance to 2.5L and 2.8L gasoline engines, and are being used by several companies. Yangzhou Diesel has five types of engines over 3.0L, while Yuchai has focused heavily on the 3.0-liter range. Shanghai Hino is also preparing a new 5-liter diesel engine, and JMC is focusing its efforts on the 3.0–7.2L range.
The rise of urban SUVs and MPVs, combined with growing demand for light-duty diesel engines and supportive industry policies, has shifted the focus of truck development toward lighter, more efficient power units. This trend has created a booming market for 3.0–7.2L diesel engines, leading to intense competition among manufacturers.
**Deutz FAW Diesel C, E, D Platforms**
These platforms cover the Deutz 1013, 2012, and 2013 series, offering 4- and 6-cylinder diesel engines across 39 models (30 for automotive use, 9 for engineering). There are over 300 variants and adapted products available. These engines meet Euro III standards and have the potential to comply with Euro IV. They deliver power ranging from 85 to 340 horsepower, with a starting torque of 600 N·m—over 10% higher than similar displacement engines. Their weight is 150–200 kg less than comparable engines, fuel consumption is ≤195 g/kWh, and noise levels are ≤96 dB.
