Internal-combustion engine industry: competition for princes competing for hegemony

In the past year, the automotive diesel engine industry, once dominated by self-owned brands, has started to undergo significant changes. With joint ventures, strategic cooperation, and the launch of new products, how will these developments reshape the Chinese diesel engine market? Let’s take a closer look at the current landscape. One of the most notable events occurred in August 2007, when two major developments took place in China’s diesel engine sector. First, Dongfeng Chaochai introduced the U.S.-developed NGD 3.0 diesel engine, while secondly, Dalian Diesel partnered with German Deutz to produce engines ranging from 4.0 to 7.2 liters. These launches were not just technical milestones but also strategic moves that signaled a shift in the industry's direction. The NGD 3.0 engine is designed to power urban utility vehicles such as SUVs, MPVs, high-end pickup trucks, and premium light trucks. On the other hand, the joint venture between Deutz and FAW Dachai resulted in the production of three key engine series: 1013, 2012, and 2013. These 4- and 6-cylinder engines cater to the needs of light commercial vehicles, filling a gap in Dachai’s product lineup. From a market strategy perspective, both Dachai and Chaochai are positioning themselves for long-term growth. Dongfeng Chaochai’s introduction of the NGD 3.0 engine solidified its leadership in the light diesel engine segment. With the rising popularity of SUVs and MPVs in urban areas, this engine offers a compelling alternative for automakers looking to meet evolving consumer demands. Similarly, Dachai’s collaboration with Deutz allows it to expand into the light commercial vehicle market, where it previously had limited offerings. The 4.0 to 7.2-liter range covers a broad spectrum of power requirements, and many of these engines fall below 6.6 liters—exactly what Dachai needed to strengthen its position. While these developments create opportunities for foreign players, they also open up space for domestic brands. Wei Anli, Secretary-General of the China Internal Combustion Engine Association, stated that although domestic diesel engines may not yet match foreign counterparts in performance, the future belongs to Chinese brands. Companies like Yuchai, Yangzhou Diesel, and others are actively developing their own solutions. For instance, Yangzhou Diesel has developed the D106 and D109 engines, which are equivalent to 2.5L and 2.8L gasoline engines, and are already being used by several manufacturers. Yuchai, a top producer in the industry, has focused on the 3.0-liter range, offering four different displacements. Meanwhile, Shanghai Hino is preparing to launch a 5-liter diesel engine, and JMC is also entering the 3.0–7.2-liter segment. With the growing demand for urban SUVs, MPVs, and passenger cars, combined with policies encouraging lighter and more efficient engines, the market for light diesel engines is expanding rapidly. This trend has made the 3.0–7.2-liter range highly competitive, attracting both domestic and international players. Deutz FAW Diesel, for example, offers three platforms—C, E, and D—that cover the 1013, 2012, and 2013 series. These include 4- and 6-cylinder engines with 39 models in total, including 30 automotive and 9 engineering variants. The engines meet Euro III standards and have potential for Euro IV compliance. They offer power outputs from 85 to 340 horsepower, with a starting torque of 600 N·m—over 10% higher than similar displacement engines. Their lightweight design (150–200 kg lighter) and low fuel consumption (≤195 g/kWh) make them highly efficient, with noise levels under 96 dB. As the Chinese diesel engine market continues to evolve, competition is intensifying, especially in the mid-range segment. Whether through joint ventures, technology imports, or domestic innovation, the race for market share is heating up, setting the stage for a dynamic and competitive future.
