Diesel engine technology is developing rapidly, and Europe III is the hottest spot in the market.

Dachai Deutzou III production line is set to go into operation soon. FAW Jiefang Dalian Diesel Engine Branch has showcased the Deutz BF6M1013 Euro III engine, which integrates single-pump technology (CA6DE3) and electric control unit pump technology. The CA6DE3 model is priced at 60,000 yuan, while the latter one costs 80,000 yuan. According to Dachai officials, the CA6DE3 uses integral single-pump technology, making it the most efficient and rapid solution for upgrading from Euro II to Euro III emissions. This engine was jointly developed by Dachai and the FAW Group Technology Center. Yin Zhanying, vice general manager of FAW Dachai, mentioned that in addition to previously introducing German Deutz technology, Germany has now requested active joint ventures with increased investment. Both sides have already held several rounds of negotiations. It is expected that by the end of this month, Dachai’s Deutz Euro III engine production line will be operational, with an annual capacity of 50,000 units. In addition, Dachai’s self-developed high-power “Dawei” series has gained significant popularity in the market. In terms of product development, Dachai has implemented a project manager system, where project managers compete within the factory. Through synchronous or cross-engineering, teams from different departments — including development, quality assurance, technology, and production — work together under a unified structure, significantly improving development efficiency. Dachai’s natural gas engines are mainly used in the gas-rich southwestern region, with over 30 buses currently operating there. The 180–230 hp Euro II natural gas engine is priced around 70,000 yuan. More than 280 gas stations have been built in the Sichuan-Yunnan area, making natural gas a more cost-effective fuel option locally. Dongfeng Chaochai launched China's first Euro III light diesel engine. The company displayed several new Euro III products, including the CY4B39Tie engine, developed in collaboration with AVL. This engine meets Euro III emission standards and has the potential to upgrade to Euro IV. Zhang Guijun, head of publicity at Dongfeng Chaochai, noted that the CY4B39Tie achieved only 89.7db of noise in recent AVL tests, reaching international leading levels. Priced at around 40,000 yuan, the engine has already been used in vehicle matching tests for the Jianghuai 1063 series. Dieselization of passenger cars is becoming a trend. For military vehicles, off-road vehicles, urban SUVs, MPVs, and pickups, Chaochai introduced the QD32 wilderness wind shadow series engine with vortex chamber combustion technology, capable of meeting both Euro II and Euro III standards. This engine became the first in Europe to meet Euro III emissions for light diesel engines. Currently, the QD32 Haoye Fengying series is being supplied in bulk to Dandong Shuguang’s Aolong and Zhengzhou Nissan’s P27 pickup trucks, with monthly sales reaching 1,500 units, and the product remains in short supply. Additionally, Beijing Jeep Warrior military vehicles use Euro II and Euro III engines, and Great Wall and ZTE SUVs are also equipped with these engines. The current production capacity of the QD32 series is 20,000 units, with a target of 30,000 units in the future. The QD32 series has undergone rigorous testing in harsh environments such as Mohe’s -41°C cold start, high altitude, and hot and humid conditions. To date, the Euro III version of the QD32 series has accumulated 8,000 units in the market. Chaochai is also developing a replacement for the QD32 series, focusing on a 2.9L engine based on the existing 3.2L displacement. The company positions its light diesel engines as high-end four-cylinder options, with prices 1.2 to 1.5 times higher than standard engines. The 4F engine, designed for a bore diameter of 485mm, targets the low-end market, particularly mini trucks. In response to the "New Socialist Countryside" policy, Chaochai is preparing for the shift toward economical light trucks in the agricultural vehicle segment. At the exhibition, the reporter also saw six-cylinder diesel engines, which are rare for Chaochai. Zhang Guijun explained that this is the 6D series, developed from the 4D series, with a displacement of 7.8L. As a subsidiary of Dongfeng Absolute Holdings, Dongfeng accounts for 25% of Chaochai’s sales. Its largest customer, Jianghuai, mainly uses Chaochai engines for light trucks, accounting for over 30% of Chaochai’s business. In recent years, Chaochai has focused on independent market development, excelling in peripheral markets and playing a key role in the medium and light diesel engine industry. Through brand positioning, Chaochai aims to break out of the low-price competition trap, offering high-quality power with low operating costs. With a network of 257 offices across China, the company provides 67 prototypes for technical training, helping users understand and trust the Chaochai brand. Weichai Lanqing series high-horsepower engines are priced at 100,000 yuan. According to Ma Weiliang, assistant general manager of Weichai Power Truck Power Sales Co., Ltd., Beijing was the first to implement Euro III emission standards. The Weichai Lanqing series WP10 and WP12 Euro III high-horsepower engines have been supplied to Foton Auman. Mass production is expected in May, covering 270–440 horsepower. Weichai aims to keep the price of a 300-horsepower Euro III engine around 100,000 yuan. Fuel consumption is another key feature. The WP12 engine has a minimum fuel consumption rate of 181g/kW•h. Wang Haiyun, director of the Weichai Beijing Office, noted that a 375-horsepower Weichai engine pulling 40 tons of cargo consumes about 43L per 100 kilometers. After calibration, fuel consumption is expected to drop by approximately 10%. Weichai has long maintained a key partnership with Jinan Bus, which has adopted 500 sets of Weichai Euro II engines. This year, Jinan Bus will continue to use Weichai engines extensively, with four Euro III models expected to come online in May.
