Combustion Engine Association Wei Anli: New energy vehicles will not impact the internal combustion engine industry

Whether this year's Detroit auto show or a series of policies introduced by the country in the near future, new energy vehicles are becoming the next "magic weapon" for manufacturers to compete in the market. However, with the promotion of new energy vehicles, especially electric vehicles, will the traditional internal-combustion engine enterprises be affected and become “dim”? Wei Anli, deputy secretary-general of the China Internal Combustion Engine Industry Association, believes: “No.”

“Whether it is a traditional car or a new energy vehicle that is now being widely discussed, 'burning' is ultimately energy, but the structure of the energy used has changed.” Wei Anli told reporters, “The reason why people feel that new energy vehicles are The traditional internal combustion engine has nothing to do with it because our understanding of the term 'new energy' is not profound enough."

According to the general statement, gasoline and diesel are the energy sources of traditional internal combustion engine cars. Vehicles that use other energy sources to provide power can be called new energy vehicles. New energy sources currently under development include natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, alcohols, dimethyl ether, hydrogen, synthetic fuels, biogas, air, and electric charge fuel cells.

In fact, a large part of the new energy we usually refer to is the addition of other fuels to gasoline or diesel fuel, and new energy vehicles are also cars driven by this fuel. "Regardless of how the form of the fuel is changed, as long as it is the driving force of combustible energy, it requires the transformation of the internal combustion engine." Wei Anli said, "As an internal combustion engine, energy is converted into high-pressure and high-temperature energy, and then driving the rotation of the connecting rod converts potential energy into kinetic energy. ."

“In addition, from the perspective of burning energy, new energy vehicles still burn energy, and they still need a carrier. The internal combustion engine is a platform to convert this so-called 'new energy' into power.” Wei Anli said, “New energy vehicles It is still an energy vehicle, so it will not impact the traditional internal combustion engine industry."

In the interview, Wei Anli told reporters that Shi Shaoxi, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in China’s only internal combustion engine discipline, once told him that so far, humans have not yet found a mobile power product with a higher thermal efficiency than the internal combustion engine. Obviously, this has further strengthened Wei Anli’s confidence in the internal combustion engine.

"If there is no thermal efficiency, there may be other ways of energy output, but for now, the internal combustion engine is still the best way to turn energy into power," he added.

Xu Jian, vice president of Volkswagen Group in China, stated at last year's automotive industry summit that by 2020, 80% of China's auto market still belongs to the transformed traditional internal combustion engine technology products, and new energy products only occupy 20% of the market share. . It can be seen that for a period of time in the future, the status of the traditional internal combustion engine industry will remain.

"On the contrary, the promotion of new energy vehicles will play a positive role in the development of the traditional internal combustion engine industry." Wei Anli further stated that "before we burned petrochemical products, the requirements for internal combustion engines at this time may not be too high, and 'new The use of energy 'fuel will prompt the internal combustion engine to improve in some technologies, such as sealing, to adapt to the needs of new fuels. In addition, from a structural point of view, the biggest feature of new energy vehicles is the application of electronic control systems. , And the use of these technologies will bring about an improvement in the structure of the internal combustion engine."

"We must admit that the demand for environmental protection and energy conservation is a promotion for our country's traditional internal combustion engine industry. It cannot be said to be an 'impact'," concluded Wei Anli.

As early as 2006, Shangchai’s natural gas engines appeared on passenger cars such as JAC, Golden Brigade, Shenlong, Zhongtong, and Chongqing Yutong. In addition, in addition to natural gas engines, Shanghai Diesel Engine Co., Ltd. has successfully developed a new engine that uses dimethyl ether as a fuel. At present, Shanghai Diesel Engine Co., Ltd. produces and sells tens of thousands of traditional diesel engines every year. The sales volume of natural gas engines is only a few hundred units per year, and the proportion of the company's business is still relatively small.
