China Algae Crisis Provides Raw Materials for U.S. Plastics Enterprises

The blue-green algae crisis in Taihu Lake, the third largest freshwater lake in China, became the first time in 2007 for news of major media at home and abroad. At that time, millions of local residents could not obtain safe drinking water from the water pipe. Since then, the government has invested billions of yuan to clean up the lake, but its effectiveness has been limited.

However, these blue-green algae that make the local people have a headache can also become a good raw material for the modern polymer industry.

They are now processed into dry powder and supplied to a U.S. company to produce algae-based bioplastics.

Wuxi Delin Seaweed Water Separation Technology Development Co., Ltd. said that it has received orders for supplying 1,400 tons of algal flour to US customers and it is scheduled to deliver goods in batches before the end of next year.

In an interview with Plastics News, Hu Hangyu, the person in charge of the company, said that because of the confidentiality agreement, it was not convenient to disclose customer information.

It is understood that this U.S. customer has found Durin in 2013 and wants to purchase algal flour with a moisture content of less than 10%. The company spent several months researching and developing technologies to reduce water content, and finally met customer requirements last year. In January this year, the company shipped five tons of algal flour samples to the United States. The customer was very satisfied, so he placed an order of 1400 tons.

In fact, there are also lake algae in the waters of the United States. However, the company says that China’s lake water is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, and thus the produced algal protein content (more than 35%) is higher than the American algae.

The company's current production line can produce 8 tons of algae powder each day, and consume 50 tons of algae that is salvaged from Taihu Lake. The company said that if it expands to five production lines, it will be able to solve all the lake algae in Taihu Lake.

De Lin once told the media that at present, algae powder is sold at a price of $500 per ton, and there is not much room for profit. However, compared to traditional applications such as composting and biogas power generation, algae powders used as raw materials for plastics can bring higher value-added.

Hu Hangyu told Plastics News that exports had higher profits than domestic sales, and added that according to his understanding, there are currently no companies that process lakeweed into plastics.

He also stated that at the moment, DeLing does not have investment equipment and a vertical extension plan to directly process blue-green algae into bio-plastics. “Because Delin is not a plastics company, it is an environmental-friendly algae-controlling enterprise and currently does not consider cross-industry development. At the same time, the technology Originally owned by U.S. patented technology, Delrin is only responsible for providing products according to customer requirements (plastic raw materials for algae processed products)."

The company has expanded the scope of cyanobacterial management from Taihu Lake to Chaohu Lake and other domestic waters.
