West Lake Chemical has announced its intention to construct a major petrochemical integrated facility in Trinidad and Tobago, with an estimated total investment of $1.5 billion. The project will feature a 570,000-ton-per-year ethylene cracker, utilizing ethane as the primary feedstock, along with downstream products such as polyethylene. Construction is anticipated to start by the end of 2007, with completion expected by 2010. The company emphasized that if additional ethane becomes available, the plant could be expanded further.
The project will be jointly evaluated by West Lake Chemical, the National Gas Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago, and the National Energy Corporation. Albert Chao, President of West Lake Chemical, highlighted that the initiative aims to leverage local resources and meet the growing demand in the U.S. market. He added that the location offers strategic advantages, including access to raw materials and a well-developed energy infrastructure. This move is seen as a significant step in expanding the company’s global footprint and strengthening its position in the petrochemical industry.
