NI Introduces Industry's First High-Performance PXI Chassis and Controller

In April 2006, National Instruments (NI) announced the industry’s first PCI Express-based technology, marking a major milestone in the evolution of the PXI platform. This innovation, known as PXI Express, delivers industry-leading synchronization performance and ensures backward compatibility with existing PXI systems. The new PXI chassis and controllers offer up to 1 GB/s of dedicated bandwidth per slot, significantly boosting the performance of current PXI setups and enabling the integration of high-bandwidth PXI Express modules. The latest PXI specification increases bandwidth by 45 times compared to traditional PXI, making it ideal for demanding applications such as IF streaming, mixed-signal acquisition, and image processing. PXI Express also introduces advanced synchronization and timing features, ensuring precise coordination across multiple modules. These enhancements make it a powerful solution for high-channel-count and high-throughput systems. With over 1,000 PXI modules already available on the market, the PXI Express platform is highly versatile and compatible with existing software. This means engineers can seamlessly upgrade their systems without needing to rewrite or modify any code. Flextronics, a global electronics manufacturing services company, has already adopted the PXI test platform as its standard due to its cost-effective and scalable nature. Hans Nyström, head of the test and verification group at Flextronics, noted that “in the communications industry, PCI Express is rapidly becoming the standard interface. Integrating this technology into the PXI platform will naturally become the dominant solution for future high-bandwidth applications.” The NI PXIe-1062Q 8-slot chassis supports both PXI and PXI Express modules, offering flexibility similar to modern PCs that feature both PCI and PCI Express slots. It includes one PXI Express system slot, one PXI Express slot with system timing, four PXI peripheral slots, and two hybrid slots that support both PXI and PXI Express modules. With six usable slots, it provides broad compatibility with more than 1,000 existing PXI modules. The NI PXIe-8103 embedded controller features a 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium M 760 processor, delivering up to 250 MB/s of dedicated bandwidth per channel and 1 GB/s of system bandwidth. Engineers can also use the MXI-Express-enabled PXIe-PCIe836x and PXIe-ExpressCard8360 controllers for desktops and laptops, offering up to 250 MB/s of system bandwidth. As the PXI Express specification allows up to 2 GB/s of dedicated bandwidth per slot, the upcoming chassis and controllers are expected to deliver even higher performance by the end of 2006. PXI Express not only maintains hardware compatibility but also ensures full software backward compatibility with existing PXI systems. Thanks to the PCI-SIG's commitment to bus-level compatibility, engineers can easily integrate PXI Express into their current setups without any software modifications. “With PXI Express, the PXI platform can now address higher-performance applications,” said Tim Dehne, Senior Vice President of Global R&D at NI. “PXI Express brings the industry’s highest bandwidth and lowest system latency, all within a fully compatible software environment.”
