UK develops marine lubricant automatic monitoring system

British researchers have recently developed an automated monitoring system specifically for the condition of marine lubricants, which provides an early warning of problems in the lubrication system, prompting the crew to take action and thereby reduce economic losses. This system fills the gap in the automatic management of marine engine oil.

The University of Sunderland recently issued a communique that the school's automation and manufacturing practice group has been involved in the development of a system of sensors and computer software that continuously monitors the viscosity, water content, impurities, etc. of the lubricating oil in the ship's engine. The characteristics, warnings about possible problems, can also give a solution. According to reports, this system is named "Poseidon System" in the Greek mythology of Poseidon.

Dr. Bagley, who led the three-and-a-half-year study, said that lubricants are very important to ships, with up to 40 tons of lubricant circulating in the main engine of a large ship. In addition to normal wear and tear, lubricating oils are also subject to various sources of pollution from seawater, fuel oil, and combustion products. If these high-priced lubricants are problematic, they may cause the ship to lose power and cause huge economic losses.

He said that the recent automatic monitoring of the ship's engine has covered fuel, air temperature, air pressure, etc., but it has not included lubricating oil before. This system fills this gap. Designed for the ship's environment, this system adapts to changes in ship vibration and humidity and temperature.
