Since the official approval of the National Drying Technology and Equipment Engineering Technology Research Center by the Ministry of Science and Technology in November of last year, the center has been actively engaged in engineering technology development, leveraging large-scale projects aligned with national key initiatives. The localization of drying technology and equipment has achieved remarkable progress, with notable achievements such as the coke oven coal moisture control device in the steel industry and the million-ton PTA (purified terephthalic acid) drying technology and equipment in the petrochemical sector reaching international standards.
Following the successful application of the PTA dryer developed by the National Drying Technology Center at Sinopec Luoyang Branch’s 325,000 tons/year PTA plant, the team continued to explore the CTA/PTA (crude terephthalic acid/fine terephthalic acid) drying theory. Through industrial testing, they validated a comprehensive mathematical model for CTA/PTA drying and gained mastery over the key technologies involved in the process and equipment design. In 2007, the center took over the production of a 600,000 tons/year PTA unit CTA/PTA dryer from Jialong Chemical Fiber Co., Ltd.
In February 2008, the center signed a contract for the development of a CTA/PTA dryer for the 1 million tons/year PTA project of Sinopec Yizheng Chemical Fiber. This project utilizes China's own intellectual property technology, and the supporting CTA/PTA dryer is the largest steam tube rotary dryer independently developed in China. The dryer is scheduled for delivery and installation in March 2009.
Coke oven coal conditioning is an advanced technology aimed at upgrading and reducing energy consumption. By using heat exchange to dry the coal, the moisture content is reduced from 10% to 6%, which helps minimize coke heat loss and improve coke quality. This technology ensures stable and continuous operation of coke ovens. The steam tube rotary drying method used in this coal conditioning technology, developed by the National Drying Center, employs low-pressure steam generated from dry quenching as a heat source. It performs indirect heat exchange with wet coal through a high-efficiency steam tube rotary dryer, while also supporting dust recovery and treatment systems. This technology has been widely adopted in coke oven coal humidity control equipment at Baoshan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd., Shanxi Huijin Stainless Steel Co., Ltd., and Panzhihua Iron and Steel Co., offering significant energy savings, environmental benefits, and economic returns.
In January 2008, the 330 tons/hour coal moisture control system project at Baoshan Iron and Steel Group Co., Ltd. entered the field installation and construction phase. The main equipment, the dryer, is expected to be operational by August 2008, after which it is anticipated to reduce coke oven fuel consumption by approximately 2–3 kg per ton. The 400 tons/hour coal moisture control device at Shanxi Huijin Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. has reached the equipment assembly stage and is expected to be installed and commissioned in March 2008. Once the coal moisture control system at Taiyuan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. is put into operation, it is expected to save 30% in coke oven fuel and 30–40% in coking wastewater. Additionally, the 350 tons/hour humidity control unit for the Coke Oven Reconstruction Project at Panzhihua Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. is currently under design, with the main equipment dryer expected to be delivered in October 2008.
