Faulty Tank Lining Causes Massive Uranium Leak in Australia Processing Plant

Uranium, a heavy metal widely used in nuclear energy production across the globe, is extracted through leaching tanks that separate the element from the ore and bring it to the surface. Two of the most well-known uranium processing sites, Ranger in Northern Australia and Rossing in Namibia, have been operating for several decades. However, recent incidents involving leaks due to faulty tank linings and corrosion have raised serious concerns about the safety and sustainability of these operations. In December, a major spill occurred at the Ranger uranium-processing plant in Australia when over 1 million liters of liquid uranium escaped from a three-story steel leaching tank. The leak was traced back to a faulty lining that caused severe corrosion in the tank’s walls. This incident followed a similar event just days earlier at Rio Tinto's Rossing mine in Namibia, highlighting a growing pattern of equipment failure in aging facilities. At Ranger, a 1450-cubic-meter leaching tank developed a hole, leading to extensive wall corrosion. Eventually, the tank split and collapsed, damaging a nearby crane. After the collapse, inspections found that one of the six tanks showed similar signs of corrosion. Experts believe the issue stems from both material degradation and poor maintenance practices. Given the age of the facility, there are growing fears about more frequent and unpredictable equipment failures. All the mine’s pipes, pumps, and tanks have exceeded their 30-year design life, increasing the risk of future leaks. Corrosion is a common challenge for steel tank owners worldwide. It's not a matter of "if" it will happen, but "when." Fortunately, solutions like HJ3’s CarbonSeal carbon fiber system can prevent such issues. Recently, a geothermal power plant with severe corrosion on its primary clarifier and demister tanks turned to HJ3 for a long-term repair solution. The clarifier, which stands 43 feet tall with a 125-foot diameter, had significant structural damage due to corrosion on its sidewalls, upper ring, and dome. To restore its integrity, four key areas were repaired: a wall patch, the connection between the tank wall and dome, the dome roof itself, and a 36-inch overflow pipe. The steel surfaces were carefully prepared using abrasive blasting and priming. A high-modulus paste was applied, followed by the installation of CarbonSeal carbon fiber. A chemical-resistant topcoat was then added to protect the structure. The CarbonSeal system provided the necessary 20-psi hoop strength to the steel vessel. To date, HJ3 has successfully reinforced four clarifiers, two demisters, and one rock muffler for this client, reducing replacement costs by 80%. In addition, the project resulted in significant environmental benefits—preventing 602 tons of steel from being sent to landfills and avoiding 1,183 tons of CO2 emissions and 36 million gallons of water consumption. If you're dealing with a steel tank that needs reinforcement or repair, consider HJ3's CarbonSeal system as a reliable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly solution. Bending Product

A bending product is a type of product that is created by bending or shaping a material into a specific shape or form. This process is often used in manufacturing to create products such as metal pipes, tubing, and sheet metal components.

Bending Products can be made from a variety of materials, including metals such as steel, aluminum, and copper, as well as plastics and other materials. The bending process can be done using a variety of techniques, including press bending, roll bending, and rotary draw bending.

Some common examples of bending products include:

- Metal pipes and tubing for plumbing, HVAC systems, and industrial applications
- Sheet metal components for machinery and equipment
- Bent wire products such as coat hangers and wire baskets
- Bent plastic components for consumer products and automotive applications

Bending products are often used in applications where strength, durability, and precision are important. The bending process allows manufacturers to create products that are custom-designed to meet specific requirements, and can be used in a wide range of industries and applications.
