Here's a report from Steve Redick at the 3-Alarm fire in Rolling Meadows, a northwest suburb of Chicago:
A large apartment complex caught fire, presenting significant challenges due to limited access on three sides and a difficult water supply. The scene was further complicated by extreme cold, heavy snow, and ice cover. A resident attempted to jump from the third floor but did not survive. The fire destroyed a large portion of the building, though it appears to have been contained by a fire wall. Firefighters deployed two elevated master streams, a deck gun, and several handlines to bring the blaze under control.
An aerial view gives a sense of the building’s size and the restricted access for emergency crews. Interestingly, a daylight photo from a similar major fire in the same complex several years ago shows a comparable outcome, but under much more favorable weather conditions.
