160 new biological technologies to be dealt with in Jiangsu province, the province will start supporting biological industry development plan in the near future

As a rapidly emerging industry, the bio-industry is gaining momentum worldwide. However, at the recent Jiangsu Bioindustry Development Forum on April 11, it was revealed that despite the abundance of biotech innovations, many of them remain stuck in the research phase. Specifically, there are currently 160 new biotech technologies in Jiangsu Province that are still "in the process of being married" — meaning they haven't yet found a practical application or commercial partner. According to the latest "Science and Technology Achievements Compendium" released by Jiangsu, over 160 new biological technologies and products have been developed by local universities and research institutes. These cover a wide range of fields, including medicine, wastewater treatment, and the comprehensive utilization of solid waste. Some of these innovations show great promise, such as using Jerusalem artichoke for fuel ethanol production, creating chemical raw materials through genetic recombination and cell fusion, and applying biotechnology to manage "three wastes" (waste gas, waste water, and solid waste). Despite this potential, there is a clear gap between the research outcomes and the market. Jiangsu has 153 bio-enterprises, with 70 being private companies. Most of these firms are small-scale, with limited technological capabilities and a pressing need for innovative solutions. Meanwhile, the promising new technologies from academic institutions are struggling to find a way into the business world, often remaining unused and waiting for the right opportunity. The bio-industry is now emerging as a key sector following the information technology industry. Over the past decade, global biotechnology has grown at an impressive rate, with sales increasing by 25% to 30% annually — ten times the global economic growth rate. More than 30 countries have launched strategies to boost their bio-industries, with the U.S., EU, Singapore, and South Korea making significant investments to support development. Recognizing the urgent need for better technology transfer, local authorities in Jiangsu have taken notice of the challenges. Han Qinghua, deputy secretary-general of the Jiangsu Provincial Government and director of the Provincial Economic and Trade Commission, announced that the province will soon launch initiatives to promote bio-industry growth. Focus areas include genetically engineered drugs, antibody drugs, fuel ethanol, biodiesel, biomass power generation, and biotechnological solutions for wastewater and garbage treatment. By 2010, Jiangsu aims to have 600 bio-products, 300 modern bio-enterprises, and two to three large-scale bio-industry bases valued over 10 billion yuan. This marks a critical step toward bridging the gap between innovation and commercialization, ensuring that Jiangsu can fully harness the potential of its growing biotech sector.
