According to recent reports, the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District is urging residents to support a referendum appearing on the March 17 election ballot. This proposal seeks to raise the district's property tax levy. For homeowners with properties valued at around $100,000, the current tax contribution stands at $153 annually. Should the referendum pass, this amount would rise by $33, resulting in a total payment of $186. Presently, the maximum taxable amount allowed for the fire district totals $963,994, whereas the WLFPD is requesting an increase to $1,152,054.
One of the primary reasons cited for this increase is the substantial hike in general and workers' compensation insurance costs. These expenses are directly tied to employee wages, which are set to escalate significantly once the minimum wage reaches $15 per hour in 2025, as mandated by state law. This year alone saw an initial rise in the minimum wage, with further increases scheduled until it hits the $15 threshold.
Over the last 19 years, emergency calls directed to the fire protection district have surged by 43%. With only three full-time members on staff, the district frequently operates with limited coverage. For instance, when an ambulance call arises, all three available personnel respond, leaving no one behind to handle other emergencies like fires. Consequently, if assistance needs to be sourced from neighboring areas like McHenry or Richmond, residents might face delays of up to 12 to 15 minutes.
Moreover, much of the district’s firefighting equipment is outdated. One of their frontline fire engines is 26 years old. Modern vehicles not only offer enhanced safety features in case of rollovers but also provide better protection for occupants during accidents. Upgrading to newer models would reduce maintenance costs while preventing unnecessary financial strain on the district.
If the referendum passes, the district won't receive any extra funds immediately; however, within a year, they plan to issue bids for purchasing a brand-new engine. Conversely, should the referendum fail, there’s a possibility of reducing the number of on-duty personnel, impacting response times even further.
In an effort to keep operational expenses under control, the fire district has implemented several cost-saving measures. They’ve applied for state grants and streamlined their management structure by avoiding replacements when employees leave.
Despite these efforts, the growing demands on the service necessitate this financial adjustment to ensure continued reliability and efficiency. While the proposed increase may feel burdensome, it represents a critical investment in maintaining public safety and modernizing essential services.
