New sugar fuel cell energy can be ten times that of existing lithium battery

Researchers at the US (VirginiaTech) have developed a new fuel cell based on sugar that has a higher energy density than current lithium-ion batteries, up to ten times that of the latter.
Sugar, or more precisely glucose, is a good source of biological life energy, providing efficient, simple energy replenishment for plant and animal survival. For humans, under aerobic breathing conditions, 3,750 calories per gram of sugar can be produced.
The latest invention of the sugar battery (VirginiaTech) has the same performance. It is reported that the capacity density of this new type of saccharide fuel cell is 596 Ah/kg. If it is simply described as an order of magnitude, it means that the capacity density of the battery reaches ten times the capacity density of the lithium ion battery currently used for consumer electronics.
Because non-biological objects are not particularly good at harvesting energy from sugar, researchers are experimenting with proprietary enzymes to break down glucose and convert it into electricity. In the experiment, the researchers used 13 different biological enzymes, combined with air and malt paste to refine into a fuel cell. Moreover, the fuel cell is not polluted, except for electrical energy, its only product is water.
Although the project's lead researcher YHPercivalZhang said that the battery has been nearly commercialized through three years of testing, the stability of the battery during multiple charging and discharging cycles is unknown.
