Infineon participates in research project on battery safety technology for electric vehicles in Germany

Recently, Infineon announced that it will participate in the German research project on battery safety technology for electric vehicles. Infineon said that in the next three years, 15 partners from the German scientific community, automotive and parts suppliers will work together to study how to further improve the safety of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles. An important part of the research is the use of new materials, new test methods and semiconductor sensors for lithium ion batteries. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has provided financial support for the research project. It aims to further consolidate the development of Germany as a leading industrial and technological center and accelerate the transition to environmentally friendly and cost-effective transportation. The German government also listed SafeBatt as one of the nine "lighthouse" projects of the German electric traffic platform (NPE). "SafeBatt" stands for "Solutions and Preventive Measures to Ensure the Intrinsic Safety of Lithium-Ion Batteries."

Another goal of the study was the “Digital Battery Pass”, which continuously records, evaluates, and stores battery safety-related parameters throughout the battery's operating life cycle. The SafeBatt team also hopes to develop a new battery safety model to ensure that the battery is in proper working condition, taking into account possible extreme conditions. These extremes include: the battery is fully discharged at low temperatures, or the battery exceeds the rated operating temperature at high temperatures in the summer, or the battery temperature is out of control. In addition, relevant experts of the SafeBatt project also hope to optimize and standardize the testing process for battery product approval, because the current testing process does not cover all possible extreme situations. SafeBatt was launched in July 2012 and will end on June 30, 2015. SafeBatt is a NPE's lighthouse project. The German government chose this as a lighthouse project in the field of electric traffic because the capture of this topic will make an important contribution to the technological advancement and cost saving of the electric traffic sector. The SafeBatt project has a budget of approximately 3.6 million euros, of which industry partners will contribute approximately 1.7 million euros, and BMBF will also participate in the project with 1.9 million euros.

The SafeBatt project partners include: BMW AG, Daimler AG, Volkswagen AG, Deutsche ACCUmotive JV, Evonik Litarion GmbH, Li-Tec Battery Co., Ltd., BASF SE, ElringKlinger AG, Infineon Technology AG, SGS Germany GmbH, Wacker Chemie AG, Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology, Münster University Battery Research Center MEET, Braunschweig University of Technology iPAT and Munich University of Technology Storage system.

Quality and safety are the top considerations for the German automotive industry and are an important reason why Germany stands out in the global automotive market. Therefore, it is also necessary to ensure the quality and safety of lithium ion batteries for electric vehicles. The SafeBatt project will play an important role in this area. In addition, SafeBatt partners will also use new materials to study how to optimize battery chemistry to improve the safety of lithium-ion batteries themselves - especially cathode materials and electrolytes. In addition, the project will also study the use of materials that have never been used before in this area to make new semiconductor sensors, such as graphene. The purpose of using sensors is to record the relevant safety parameters of the battery, including the process of chemical change inside the battery. Increases and temperature rises and falls.
