I just got back from covering a fire scene early this morning on Sunday, June 24th. It happened at 7241 South Sangamon Street in Chicago, where the 19th Battalion responded to a working fire. The incident started around 5:45 AM, and Engine 54 arrived shortly afterward. By the time I got there, firefighters were already cleaning up the area after managing the blaze that originated on the first floor.
As crews were finishing their operations, something unexpected happened—a mother pitbull and five of her playful puppies suddenly emerged from the back door. They seemed completely unfazed by all the activity going on around them. It was a heartwarming sight to see these animals remain calm amidst all the commotion.
Attached are some photos I took during my visit to the scene. In one picture, you can see firefighters diligently washing down any remaining hotspots. Another shows Engine 54 parked nearby, ready for action. There’s also an image featuring the pitbull family chilling near the chaos, which adds a unique touch to what could have been just another routine fire call. For scale, here's a shot of Engine 129 as well.
It’s always interesting how nature finds its way even into situations like these. Despite the stress of dealing with emergencies, moments like these remind us of life’s resilience.
