Hey everyone,
I recently stumbled upon some old photos in my collection. They might have been taken by Jack Connors—I’m not entirely sure who originally gave them to me. These pictures depict a scene from July 6, 1970, at 1748 North Ashland Avenue. It was a chaotic day involving a 5-11 and a 1 special. The next day, Snorkel 7 was out working at the site when disaster struck—a wall collapsed and crushed the basket they were operating from. Unfortunately, Jack Walsh lost his life in this tragic incident.
Afterward, the area was converted into a park, but over time it fell into disrepair. Eventually, the memorial marker honoring Jack Walsh was relocated to Engine 55’s firehouse, where it’s now kept in much better condition. These photos really capture the extent of the destruction and give us a sense of just how devastating this accident was.
One interesting detail caught my attention while looking through these images. There’s a tall figure standing next to Quinn and what looks like a 70s-era TV reporter. Do any of you recognize who that “big guy†might be?

[Attached are several photos showing the aftermath of the wall collapse. The first image shows Chicago Fire Commissioner Robert J. Quinn, though the photographer remains unnamed. The following images display the severely damaged fire truck, offering a stark reminder of the danger firefighters face daily.]

Let me know if anyone has more information about the person standing beside Quinn or the circumstances surrounding this event. It’s always important to remember those we’ve lost and ensure their stories aren’t forgotten.
Take care,
Steve
