According to NHTSA, the average number of deaths per year due to reversing accidents was 292. The deceased were mainly children and the elderly. Although the installation of a reversing camera for 16.6 million new cars each year is expected to cost 1.9 billion to 2.7 billion U.S. dollars, this measure can reduce the number of accidents caused by reverse vehicles by half.
NHTSA will accept various suggestions and opinions in the next 60 days, and announce the final plan on February 28 next year. NHTSA stipulates that by September 2012, 10% of new vehicles must install a reversing camera; by September 2013, the installation rate must reach 40%; by September 2014, the installation rate must reach 100%.
On the day NHTSA announced the new regulations, Jim Buczkowski, Ford’s director of electronic and electrical systems, said: “The visibility is one of the main considerations for today’s consumers. By the end of 2011, almost all Ford and Lincoln brand new cars will have a reversing camera installed. ."
