Skokie flies WTC Patriot Flag

As I stood at the intersection of Skokie Blvd and Golf Road this morning, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and solemnity. The Skokie Fire Department had just hosted a very special event, flying a massive Patriot Flag that stands as a tribute to those who lost their lives on 9/11. This flag, measuring 30 feet by 50 feet, has been making its way across the country, set to visit all 50 states before landing at Ground Zero, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania during the week of September 11, 2011. Lieutenant Hank Sajovic, who spearheaded this initiative, shared with me how the flag represents more than just a symbol of patriotism. It’s a moving reminder of the resilience and unity of our nation. The Skokie Fire and Police Honor Guard were there to ensure the flag-raising ceremony was nothing short of dignified. Watching the flag unfurl against the backdrop of Skokie Truck Company No. 18 was breathtaking. The images captured by Hank himself show firefighters and officers working together to hoist the flag onto the aerial ladder. As the flag rose higher, its vibrant colors seemed to glow against the clear blue sky. The immense size of the flag became even more apparent as it stretched out fully, dwarfing everything around it. It was a moment that brought together the community in remembrance of those we’ve lost. The flag carries with it a banner listing the names of every individual who perished on that tragic day. It’s a poignant detail that adds weight to the significance of this journey. To see proud members of the Skokie police and fire departments gathered together, some even posing for photos, was heartwarming. Captain Dan Smith, along with Jim Walters, the Skokie Deputy Chief, were present alongside retired FDNY Lieutenant Joe Torrillo, who survived the collapse of both World Trade Center towers. This flag isn’t just traveling—it’s creating memories and inspiring conversations. Its journey through Illinois included stops in Chicago, Orland Park, Joliet, Marseilles, and Springfield. The Tribune Local (Skokie Edition) recently covered the flag’s progress, highlighting its symbolic importance and the impact it has on communities it visits. I left the scene feeling grateful for events like these that remind us of the strength of our nation and the bonds that connect us all. If you're interested in following the flag's journey, you can check out the Patriot Flag's official website where they share updates and stories from each location. It’s a journey worth tracking, and one that continues to honor those we lost.
