EU revised bike European safety standards

On December 2, 2011, the European Union's "Official Gazette" published European Commission resolution 2011/786/EU, which covers European safety standards that bicycles, children's bicycles and bicycle racks must comply with.

According to Directive 2001/95/EC on general product safety, the European standardization body must establish European standards to ensure that products sold in the EU meet the general safety requirements of the Directive.

Recently, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) announced the revision of the European Standard EN 14764:2005 on urban bicycles, EN 14766:2005 on mountain bikes, EN 14781:2005 on racing bicycles and EN 14872:2006 on bicycle racks. For children's bicycles not covered by the Toy Safety Directive, the European Standard EN 14765:2005+A1:2008 will also be revised.

Bicycles sold in the European Union must comply with the new general safety requirements and mainly address:

Other requirements include the mechanical characteristics of the bicycle, such as the requirements for the folding system and fasteners, to ensure that the bicycle is safe and practical and to avoid injury to the user.

In addition, there are separate regulations for different types of bicycles. For example, children's bicycles must comply with the saddle height and the average weight limit, and the brake regulations are more stringent.

Bicycle racks must meet more stringent requirements in terms of user and child safety, load capacity, size and stability. The safety components of mountaineering and racing bikes must be specially designed to withstand greater impact.
