Dennis McGuire, Jr. recently shared this update:
The year of this vehicle is 1987. It was manufactured by SPARTAN for the chassis and E-ONE for the body. This rig features a 55-foot SNORKEL aerial device. The total hours on the vehicle are 748. The VIN is 158BT0L07HC185046. Unfortunately, it is currently not running. This Snorkel apparatus was sold for $4,550 at auction through the City of Chicago’s online platform.
Attached are some photos from the Chicago Auction Site. The first image shows the decommissioned Chicago Reserve Snorkel in its entirety, highlighting the distinctive design of the E-ONE body and the powerful 55-foot Snorkel boom. In the second photo, you can see the driver’s side of the apparatus, giving a closer look at its condition. The third image provides an even more detailed view of the E-ONE body and the impressive 55-foot Snorkel boom, showcasing the engineering behind this piece of firefighting equipment.
As a firefighter or someone interested in emergency vehicles, it’s always fascinating to see how these rigs evolve over time. While this one may no longer be operational as part of the active fleet, it still holds significant historical value. It makes me wonder what kind of calls this vehicle responded to during its years of service with the Chicago Fire Department. I imagine it played a crucial role in helping to protect the city and its residents.
I’m curious about what the future holds for this Snorkel now that it has been decommissioned. Will it find a new home with a collector, or perhaps get repurposed for training exercises? Whatever the outcome, it’s clear that this vehicle has quite the story to tell. For anyone looking to add a piece of firefighting history to their collection, this could be an exciting opportunity.
If you're a fan of classic fire apparatus, this auction presents a unique chance to own a part of Chicago's firefighting legacy. Let me know if you have any thoughts or experiences with similar auctions—would love to hear your insights!
