Buffalo Grove extricates driver from SUV 6-8-12

At around midnight on Thursday night (early Friday morning), the Buffalo Grove Fire Department responded to an emergency call about a single-car accident involving a collision with a tree. Upon arrival, crews discovered a relatively new Cadillac Escalade with severe front-end damage, which had unfortunately trapped the driver inside. Units including Truck 25, Engine 27, Ambulance 25, and Battalion 4 quickly sprang into action, working diligently for approximately 49 minutes to safely extract the trapped driver, who was the vehicle's only occupant. The impact was so forceful that it completely obliterated the front portion of the car, particularly damaging the area around the driver's side. This intense collision left one of the driver's legs pinned under the dashboard, making the rescue operation both challenging and critical. Firefighters coordinated their efforts carefully, using specialized tools to cut through various parts of the vehicle to free the driver. Images taken by Larry Shapiro during the incident show the extent of the damage and the meticulous steps taken by the firefighters to ensure a successful rescue. One particularly striking image shows the rear door being removed after the hinges were cut, while another captures an officer breaking out the rear window glass. Additional photos highlight the removal of the driver’s door and the subsequent cutting of the support column to gain full access to the patient. The sheer force of the crash was evident, as seen in the images showing the demolished front end of the Cadillac Escalade and the immovable nature of the tree it collided with. Larry Shapiro documented the entire event, providing a comprehensive visual record of the rescue process. His photographs capture not only the dramatic aftermath of the collision but also the teamwork and professionalism displayed by the Buffalo Grove Fire Department throughout the operation. The dedication of these first responders was crucial in ensuring that the situation ended safely despite the significant challenges posed by the severity of the crash.
