Oak Lawn fire chief to add Chicago Ridge to his duties

The Southtown Star recently published an article detailing the transition in leadership for the Chicago Ridge Fire Department following the recent resignation of its chief. Oak Lawn Fire Chief George Sheets is set to take on a new role, but he won’t be leaving his current position. A unanimous agreement approved by the village board on Tuesday allows Sheets to continue as Oak Lawn’s fire chief while also stepping into the role of Chicago Ridge’s fire chief through 2016. The Chicago Ridge Village Board is expected to formally approve the arrangement at its meeting on July 15, according to Oak Lawn Village Manager Larry Deetjen. Deetjen explained that the idea came from Chicago Ridge Mayor Chuck Tokar, who approached Oak Lawn with the proposal. However, Tokar was unavailable for comment on Tuesday regarding Sheets’ potential new role. This development follows the resignation of Chicago Ridge Fire Chief Robert Muszynski, who cited “personal differences” with village officials, particularly Tokar, over proposed changes to the fire department. Several Chicago Ridge trustees confirmed that Muszynski’s resignation was encouraged by Tokar, though the board ultimately accepted his letter of resignation last month. The tension escalated after the village board had previously urged Tokar to explore more efficient ways to provide firefighting and ambulance services. These discussions have raised concerns among firefighters about potential job losses, with options including hiring a private ambulance service or even disbanding the fire department and joining a fire protection district. Last month, Christ Schmelzer, president of Chicago Ridge Professional Firefighters Local 3098, described the atmosphere in the firehouse as tense following Muszynski’s departure and the uncertainty surrounding the department’s future. Deetjen did not comment directly on Chicago Ridge’s exploration of alternative firefighting and ambulance models, but he emphasized that “there’s ample opportunity to run fire departments more efficiently.” He also expressed confidence in Sheets, saying he will soon meet with the 13 Chicago Ridge firefighters to better understand their needs and expectations. Thanks, Dan.
