Electronic products put forward high requirements for plastic parts China's precision injection equipment development must be strengthened

The 9th China Beijing International Science & Technology Industry Expo is currently taking place, showcasing some of the most cutting-edge digital products from around the globe. Major brands like LG, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, and Haier are among the highlights, displaying a wide range of electronic devices that are shaping the future of technology. However, industry experts have noted a critical challenge: the precision injection molding equipment needed to produce plastic enclosures and components for these high-tech products is largely imported. This highlights a key area where China’s plastics industry needs to focus on innovation and development. According to Xu Zhengcang, deputy chief engineer at China National Light Industry Machinery Corporation, the growth of China’s plastics industry has significantly driven advancements in the press sector. In recent years, the press industry has maintained an average annual growth rate of over 20%, making it one of the fastest-growing segments within China’s machinery sector. While domestic plastic processing machinery can now meet most local demands, there remains a noticeable gap compared to global standards in areas such as equipment efficiency, quality consistency, automation levels, and product development speed. Especially when it comes to precision injection molding machines used for high-accuracy plastic parts, the domestic market still relies heavily on foreign imports. In 2005 alone, nearly a quarter of the $3.526 billion worth of injection molding machines imported into China were high-end precision models—products that are both technologically advanced and high-value. This dependency underscores the need for stronger investment in R&D and production capabilities for such critical machinery. Meanwhile, the rapid expansion of China’s electronics and information industries is placing even greater demands on the production of high-quality plastic components. In 2005, China’s electronics manufacturing sector reached $428.7 billion, ranking second globally. Its exports exceeded $260 billion, accounting for approximately 25% of the world’s total trade in electronic goods. Products like mobile phones, personal computers, monitors, and televisions rely heavily on plastic parts, engineering plastics, and composite materials. These materials require sophisticated processing equipment and molds, and as consumer expectations for both design and performance continue to rise, manufacturers are under pressure to adopt new technologies and improve product quality. As a result, the demand for advanced plastic processing equipment in the electronics sector is expected to grow steadily. Although companies like Ningbo Haitian and Guangdong Kenli have made significant progress in matching international standards, the scale of the market still requires more focused efforts in research, development, and marketing. Strengthening the domestic precision injection molding industry is not just a technical challenge—it's a strategic necessity for China’s long-term competitiveness in the global tech landscape.
