The 9th China Beijing International Science & Technology Industry Expo is currently underway, showcasing the most cutting-edge digital products from around the globe. Among the highlights are a wide range of electronic devices from renowned brands like LG, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, and Haier. Industry experts have emphasized that the precision injection molding equipment required to produce plastic casings and accessories for these high-tech products is predominantly imported. This underscores the need for China’s plastics industry to invest more in the development of advanced precision injection molding machines.
According to Xu Zhengcang, deputy chief engineer at China National Light Industry Machinery Corporation, the growth of China’s plastics sector has significantly contributed to the advancement of the press industry. In recent years, the press industry has maintained an average annual growth rate of over 20%, making it one of the fastest-growing sectors within China’s machinery industry. While domestic plastic processing machinery can now meet most of the country’s needs, there remains a noticeable gap compared to global standards in areas such as equipment efficiency, quality consistency, automation levels, and product development cycles. Especially when it comes to precision injection molding machines used for high-accuracy plastic components, the domestic market still relies heavily on imports.
In 2005, injection molding machines accounted for nearly 25% of the $3.526 billion worth of imports, with most of them being high-tech, high-value precision models. This trend reflects the growing demand for advanced manufacturing capabilities in China.
At the same time, the rapid expansion of China’s electronics and information industry has raised the bar for supporting plastic components. Statistics reveal that in 2005, China’s electronics manufacturing sector reached $428.7 billion, ranking second globally. Its export value surpassed $260 billion, representing roughly 25% of the total trade in global electronic goods. Products such as switches, mobile phones, computers, monitors, color TVs, and laser disc players rely heavily on plastic parts made from engineering plastics, elastomers, and composites—materials that require high-performance processing equipment and molds.
Moreover, consumer expectations for both the appearance and internal quality of electronic products are increasing, pushing manufacturers to adopt new technologies and improve overall product quality. As a result, the demand for precision plastic parts processing equipment in the electronics sector is expected to continue growing rapidly in China.
Xu Zhengcang also noted that while some domestic companies, such as Ningbo Haitian and Guangdong Kenli, have developed presses that are close to international standards, the market demand is still huge. Therefore, the domestic press industry must further invest in R&D for precision injection molding technology and intensify efforts in marketing and application. This will not only help reduce reliance on foreign imports but also support the long-term development of China’s high-tech manufacturing sector.
