Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:
The Lincolnshire Police Department responded to a community pool located at 445 Village Green around 2:20 p.m. after reports of two unconscious teenagers. Upon arrival, officers found the teens breathing but unresponsive and immediately transported them to Lutheran General Hospital in serious condition.
Initial investigations pointed toward a possible chlorine or carbon monoxide gas leak following pool maintenance earlier that day. Firefighters and hazardous materials teams were dispatched to the clubhouse near the pool, where the two teens were discovered. Several first responders inhaled the toxic fumes during the operation. In total, 14 individuals were taken to local hospitals for treatment — including six police officers, four firefighters, and four civilians, among them the two original victims.
Fire Chief Tom Krueger noted that two of the devices used to measure hazardous substances at the scene were damaged due to the high concentration of poisonous gas in and around the area. He described it as one of the most extreme incidents he had encountered in his 19 years on the job.
Photos from the scene show emergency vehicles and personnel responding to the incident, highlighting the scale of the operation. The images include fire trucks, ambulances, and equipment from multiple departments across the region, underscoring the collaborative effort required to manage the situation.
