The Lincolnshire Police Department responded to a community pool at 445 Village Green around 2:20 p.m. after reports of two unconscious teenagers. Upon arrival, officers found the teens breathing but unresponsive and immediately transported them to Lutheran General Hospital in serious condition.
Initial investigations pointed to a possible chlorine or carbon monoxide leak following pool maintenance earlier that day. Firefighters and hazardous materials teams focused on the clubhouse near the pool, where the two teens were discovered. Several responders, including six police officers, four firefighters, and four civilians, inhaled toxic fumes during the operation. A total of 14 individuals were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Fire Chief Tom Krueger noted that two of the hazardous material detection devices used at the scene were damaged due to the high concentration of poisonous gas. He described the incident as unprecedented in his 19 years of service, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
