Antioch seeks tax levy

The Lake-County News-Sun recently published a story about the Antioch Fire Department seeking voter approval for a tax levy to support emergency medical services (EMS). Facing a nearly $800,000 budget gap, local officials in Antioch are planning to ask residents to approve a 25-cent tax increase in November. This move comes after the village and township both agreed to put the same referendum on the ballot for unincorporated areas of Antioch. If approved, the tax levy would mean an annual increase of $101.67 for homeowners with a $140,000 property value and $172.50 for those with a $225,000 home, according to Village Administrator James Keim. He emphasized that this step is crucial for maintaining and improving EMS in the area, which has historically relied on the volunteer-based Antioch Rescue Squad (ARS). Until last year, ARS provided ambulance services for the village, but they have since ended their contract. The First Fire District will now manage ambulance services for the unincorporated parts of Antioch. Meanwhile, the Antioch Fire Department will handle both fire and ambulance services for the village and township starting in May, under the leadership of Fire Chief John Nixon. Nixon sees the tax levy as essential to the success of this new joint operation, estimating it could bring in around $1.6 million annually for EMS. “The goal is to create a stable funding source for ambulance services,” he said. He also noted that while ARS never offered free service, their model—relying on donations and benefactors—was not sustainable in today’s financial climate. Keim added that even when ARS was active, some tax dollars were used to support their operations. “There’s a common misunderstanding that tax money hasn’t been involved or that the service was free,” he explained. “But high-quality EMS requires a reliable funding source. Most communities have already adopted this approach through tax levies.” Both officials stress that the referendum is critical for ensuring continued access to life-saving services without relying on uncertain or temporary funding. With rising costs and limited resources, they believe this is a necessary step toward long-term stability.
