This is from John Tulipano:
At approximately 05:40 on January 5th, St. Charles Fire Department was dispatched to a smoke report at 828 S. 3rd Street. Upon arrival, crews discovered a fire in the basement of the building. A box alarm was initially called, followed by a second alarm as the situation escalated.
The structure collapsed before I arrived, forcing crews into a defensive operation. When I got there, they were using one ladder pipe, one deck gun, and seven handlines to contain the fire. It was a challenging and dangerous scene, with limited visibility and heavy smoke.
